History

Pride Action North started life under a very different guise when it was founded in 2017 by a group of volunteers wishing to host a protest march and celebration event to mark the global Pride movement.

What we do

Northumberland Pride was formed to provide an annual event allowing people from a rural, often isolated, county easier access to a Pride festival, removing the need to travel into the city of Newcastle, or further afield.

The inaugural Northumberland Pride event took place at Alnwick Rugby Club in 2018 and included a music event and a parade through the town to the venue, and the instant success prompted a further event in 2019, held at County Hall, in Morpeth. The celebration was spread over an entire week with the ‘7 Days of Pride’, a series of activities promoting engagement with the LGBTQIA community, organised in the lead-up to the main festival.

Like most things, Northumberland Pride’s activities were disrupted by the outbreak of Covid-19 (although Pride festivals still went ahead in Ashington in 2020 and 2021).

But instead of waiting for the pandemic to pass, the organisation adapted its services and provided vital support to the communities it served by delivering key items to members of the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly those struggling with their identity or sexuality at a time when they felt isolated from support.

From there, the charity transformed into one which specialised in service delivery for members of the LGBTQIA+ communities and it has continued to add support services and training and development programmes to ensure all members feel included, accepted and valued.

As the charity grew and started employing staff on a permanent basis, it was agreed that the organisation needed to rebrand to better encapsulate the additional services it provided across a larger geographical area.

In June 2023, the charity was renamed as Pride Action North and the rebranding included a new logo, new website, updated values and a new mission statement to ensure more people better understood the wide range of support available from the team.
